Morgan 4ft, 5ft & 6ft punching bags are the most popular punch bags used for both boxing and Muay Thai kickboxing at home and in the gym. Also 60cm to 100cm high junior size punching bags are excellent when only a small area is available.
When a boxer or kickboxer chooses a punching bag it is almost like they are choosing a close friend. After all the punching bag is the one bit of equipment the fighter is probably going spend the most amount of time with, so making the right choice of punching bag is very important.
There is a huge selection of Morgan punching bags to choose from at Universal Self Defence, ranging from ideal kids punching bags for personal home use to 6ft commercial gym quality punching bags. The smaller punching bags come with heavy duty straps and steel rings for quick easy hanging whilst the bigger heavier punching bags come with even stronger steel chains and swivels to lessen any twisting action out of the bag.
Traditionally most punching bags were made with either leather or canvas. Although leather punching bags are very tough and long lasting they needed extra maintenance and needed to be regularly oiled with leather oil. The problem with leather and canvas punching bags was they were harder to keep clean and when they absorbed sweat they become smelly and would even develop mildew.
To solve this problem all the punching bags are now made with thick heavy duty reinforced rip stop vinyl covers that are UV stabilised and mildew resistant. So now punching bags can easily be kept clean and looking good and the top quality punching bags at Universal Self Defence can still be just as tough and long lasting as the old leather punching bags and cost a lot less too.
Whilst there have been many changes made with punching bag training over the years, the primal desire to hit a punching bag and the satisfaction you feel after a good hard hitting workout remain stronger than ever. With a huge increase in popularity, punching bag training is no longer only enjoyed by boxers and kickboxers but anyone who wants to keep fit and have a good workout. Once upon-a-time it was considered very unladylike for the fairer sex to even throw a punch let along get stuck into a punching bag. It is nothing short of astounding how much times have changed especially with female participation in all sports including boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts and punching bag cardio fitness training. In fact no women’s gym would look complete without punching bags to workout on. At Universal Self Defence the most popular punching bag for females is the 1 metre long Morgan Ladies Punch bag.
Morgan Punching Bag Sizes
Sizing with Morgan punching bags starts as small as 60cm x 30cm x approx. 15kg and then goes up in various sizes and weights until you get to the bigger and heavier 4ft, 5ft and 6ft Morgan punching bags.
You can have your punching bag as big as you like provided you have a strong enough structure to hang it up. Make sure you have a builder or a knowledgeable handyman to help you hang your punching bag securely.
The biggest advantage of having a longer punching bag is that multiple users of varying heights can use the same punching bag without having to adjust the height. This is why you see mostly 4ft to 5ft punching bags used in boxing gyms and 5ft to 6ft in kickboxing gyms.
For personal home use you only need a punching bag for boxing that is from your hip to the top of your head height or for kickboxing from your knee to the top of your head. But of course if you are going to have a few users then it's best to have a punching bag long enough to suit everyone’s height so you don’t have to adjust the height of the bag.
Unfilled Empty Punching Bags
Buying your punching bag empty or unfilled is a great way to save on the price of the punching bag and on delivery costs and is extremely popular if you live in a remote country area where filled punching bags delivery costs can be expensive.
Filling Punching Bags
Empty punch bags are very easy to fill with any torn up old rags, clothes, towels, sheets, cushions etc &/or you can go to your nearest clothing manufacturers or second hand clothing charity stores and use their left over material.
Punch bags should be packed down evenly with no air pockets.
As you are filling you can push down rags evenly with a baseball or cricket bat if available or you can just lay the bag down on the floor and push down rags with your foot.
If you want a lighter bag you can add a few foam pieces.
For a heavier bag you can put sand in sealed bags and position sand bags in the centre of the bag.
Do not fill punch bags with loose sand as this makes them too hard and heavy and reduces the life of your bag.
Also you may suffer joint injury if you hit a bag that is too hard to absorb impact.
To reduce impact on hands and joints and prolong the life of your punch bag always use good quality bag gloves.
