Jo & Bo Staffs
Martial arts staffs, Jo or Bo wooden pole fighting is a form of martial art that has been most popular in China and Japan for centuries.
Training with oak or rattan wood fighting poles has spread throughout the world as many martial artists enjoy the benefits and appreciate the skill required for the art of staff fighting.
For staff pole fighting training purposes there are several types of wooden poles which are usually around 3 cm wide. The full length fighting pole staffs are 72 inches or 180 cm long and is called the Bo. A shorter version is approximately 50 inches or 127 cm long and is called a Jo.
The full length 72 inch Bo staff is best for longer distance martial arts combat training while the shorter 50 inch Jo staff is ideal for closer in combat training.
Learning to fight using a pole type weapon can be a handy skill but for some martial art styles, it is an intricate part of their training. Martial arts such as Kung Fu, Karate, Hapkido and Aikido are typical styles that practise the wooden Bo and Jo staff.
